Lalita Sahasranama meanings per name

501. Guḍānnaprīta-mānasā

Meaning – She is very pleased when the dish guḍānna is offered to Her.

Gudānna recipe –

1 cup rice, ¼ measure of jaggery, ½ measure of milk and ¼ cup ghee (clarified butter). Cook rice in milk and water and add jaggery and ghee. Bananas (kadali phala), coconut (naarikela) and cardamom (elaichi) are to be mixed in it in reasonable quantities. This preparation should be offered to God and thereafter consumed as prasadam.

Consumption of this food at this stage of pregnancy is very ideal for the development of foetus and for the health of the expecting mother. At the same time, this food is ideal for those aspirants who are focusing on the Manipura chakra.

502. Samasta-bhakta-sukhadā

Meaning – She blesses all types of devotees with comforts and happiness.

In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna explains that those who worship Him can be classified into 4 groups. They are-

Artho jignyāsur’arthārthi gnyānī cha bharatar-shabha

Meaning – the one who is grieved, the one who desires materialistic comforts, the one who seeks the divine knowledge and the man of wisdom worship God.

The Divine Mother fulfils the needs of every type of devotee. She rescues those who are in distress and who plead for help (aarthi); She fulfils the desires of those who seek materialistic comforts (artharthi); She bestows knowledge to those who aspire for it.

503. Lākinyambā-svarūpiṇī

Meaning – She is is Lākini Devi, the presiding deity of Manipura chakra also known as Siddeshwari.

The dhyana shloka for Lākini Devi is-

Digpatrī nābhipadme trivadana vilasat damstrinīm raktavarnām
Shaktim dambolidandāvabhayamapibhujai dārayanteem
Mahogrām dāmardyāyai paritām pashujana bhayadām
Māmsa dhātve kanishthām gaudānna saktachittam
sakala sukha karīm Lakini bhāvayāmaha

The names 504 to 513 refer to Goddess Kākinī who is seated in the Swadhishthana Chakra.

504. Svādhiṣṭānāmbuja -gatā

Meaning – She is seated in the lotus called Swadhisthana chakra.

Here She takes on the name Vayo’vasthā-vivarjitā (refer nama 470).

This chakra corresponds to the fourth month of pregnancy. The stomach, waist as well as legs of the foetus are developing rapidly. The Divine Mother seated in the Swadhisthana chakra offers full protection to the foetus at this stage.

505. Caturvaktra-manoharā

Meaning – In the Swadhisthana Chakra, She is glowing resplendently with Her four faces.

With 4 faces, She represents the energy of Brahma (Goddess Brāhmi).

506. Sulādyāyudha-saṁpannā

Meaning – She is fully equipped with trident and other weapons.

At Swadhisthana chakra She possesses 4 weapons viz., Shoola (trident), pasha (noose), kapaala (skull) and abhaya (fear not mudra). She is shining with these weapons.

507. Pītavarṇā

Meaning – She is resplendently shining with Her yellow coloured clothes.

Krishna always wears yellow clothes (Peetambhara dhaari).

Pibati manaha iti peetam- means ‘yellow (peeta) colour drinks up (pibati) the mind (manasa)’. Yellow colour attracts the mind and thereafter swallows it up. The Lord attracts us and extracts out of us our desires, attractions and finally our mind. Lord Krishna ploughs our mind (krishati) and thereby purifies it. Seated at this chakra, the Divine Mother with Her yellow clothes attracts our mind.

508. Ati-garvitā

Meaning – She takes great pride (garva) in her splendour (soundarya).

This pride is purely aimed at depriving Her devotees of their ego. It stems out of Her confidence that She can bring out the desired changes in them.

It is humanly impossible to bring about a complete transformation in another human being. Only the Sadguru or Goddess Bhagawati can achieve this feat.

509. Medo-niṣṭā

(Here it is Medo nishta and not Medho nishta. Meda and medha are two different words. Meda is the bone marrow, the flexible tissue found within the bones; medha refers to the intellectual capacities).

Meaning- She blesses the foetus with bone marrow.

Bone marrow plays a significant role in production of new blood cells and strengthens the bones.

510. Madhu-prītā

Meaning – The Divine Mother loves honey.

Honey should be naturally procured without causing any harm or injury to the bees. Bees should not even be smoked out of the hive. After the bees naturally discard the hive, it should be broken down and honey extracted from it. Abhisheka or an offering of honey thus procured is very dear to Divine Mother.

Consumption of honey renders the bone marrow (meda) strong and healthy. Every person, irrespective of age should consume a teaspoon of honey daily.
