Lalita Sahasranama meanings per name

811. Pāśa hantrī

Meaning- She relieves the devotee from bondages (pāshas) and grants him liberation.

Ghrunā lajja bhayam shanka juhupsā cheti panchami
Kulam shīlam tathā jatih ashtau pāsha prakīrtitā.

Ghrunā- Feelings of disgust, aversion and unnecessary compassion are classified as ghrunā. Compassion should be towards the needy. Undue compassion towards the children spoils them and thus is harmful.

Here, lajja means feeling embarrassed when it is uncalled for. Bhayam means unwanted fear. Both of these are major obstacles for progressing in life. The best example of this is being embarrassed or afraid to collect one’s marks-card.

Shanka is to be needlessly doubtful. Juhupsa reflects the hesitation towards the good aspects of life. Kula means to entertain feelings of caste differences. sheela (character), jati (distinction between male and female) are all unnecessary luggages that are bondages. Unless they are given up spiritual journey is impossible.

812. Paramantra-vibhedini

Meaning- She destroys blackmagic-mantras and other the evil energies that are directed by other people (para) towards her devotees.

813. Mūrtā & 814. Amūrtā

Meaning- She is both with-form (Murta) and without-form (Amurta).

Murta is the form with attributes/ traits (saguna, murti). This is the visible form (vyakta). Amurta means to exist in a state that is devoid of any attributes (nirguna). This is the invisible (avayakta) form.

815. Anitya-tṛptā

Meaning- Transitory or temporal offerings are received joyfully by Her.

Lord Krishna states in Bhagavad Gita –

patram, pushpam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty- upahrtam asnami prayatatmanah.

Meaning- Any offering, however trivial it may be, is accepted by Me joyfully when offered with total devotion. The offering could be a mere leaf, flower or just water.

816. Muni-mānasa-haṃsikā

Meaning- She is the swan (hamsa) who swims in the mind (manas sarovar) of the great munis (Maharishis).

Muni is one who practices mental mouna (silence). Such great Maharishis master the art of controlling the mind. She swims joyfully in such minds.

817. Satya-vratā

Meaning- To abide by truth (satya) is Her vow (vrata). Truth is dearest to Her.

818. Satya rūpā

Meaning- She is eternal and is the form of truth.

The word ‘satya’ stands for truth and for permanency. She is Brahma.

819. Sarvāntaryāmiṇī

Meaning- She exists within every being (soul). She flows within the heart and mind of every being.

820. Satī

Meaning-

a) She incarnated as Sati, the daughter of Daksha. She married Shiva.

b) She is a very chaste woman. A totally chaste woman (pativrata) is addressed as Sati.
