Says Lord Hayagriva to Maharishi Agastya-
Nama sahasram khaditham they ghatothbhava,
Rahasyaanam rahasyam cha Lalitha preethi dayakam,
I have recited to you, O Maharishi Agastya, the 1000 names of Lalita devi that are considered utmost secretive. These names are extremely dear to Lalita devi (and hence they should be recited regularly).
Aanena sadrusam stotram na bhootam na bhavishyati
Sarva roga prasamanam sarva sampath pravardhanam
No hymn (stotram) equal to it has ever been created before nor will ever be created in future. This is because it has originated directly from the deities of speech (vag Devatas) who are none other than forms of Goddess Saraswati. It dissipates all kinds of diseases and showers all forms of prosperity.
Sarvaapath mruthyu shamanam akala mruthyu nivaranam.
Sarva jwararthi hananam deergayushya pradhayakam
Recitation of this Sahasranama relieves from accidental deaths and is an antidote to untimely death. Death that arises out of attack by ferocious wild animals such as tiger, lion etc. is called akala or apa mrutyu. It dispels all the troubles and infliction that arise out of sickness (jwara) and bestows longevity.
Puthra pradhama puthraanaam purushartha pradhayakam.
Yidham visesharidevya sthothram preethi vidhatakam
The person reciting is blessed with offspring (children) and bestows Purushartha (fulfillment of the four fold aims of life i.e. dharma-artha-kama-moksha). It relieves all the obstacles (for which we pray to Lord Ganesha); bestows good health (the task performed by Lord Sun) and fulfillment of Purushartas (towards which prayers are offered to Lord Shiva or Chandika devi). All these are achieved by recitation of this Lalita Sahasranama.
Japen nityam prayathnena lalithopasthi thath para.
Pratha snathwa vidhathena sandhya karma samapya cha
The result of performing Lalita upasana is bestowed upon those who recite this Sahasranama with due intention and effort daily. Reading it without completing the daily ritual of bathing amounts to a grave sin. The daily karmas (rituals) that are being adhered to such as sandhya, daily puja etc. should not be given up . They should be duly attended to and thereafter this recitation should be undertaken.
Pooja gruhe thatho gathwa chakra rajam samarchayeth
Vidhyam japeth sahasram vaa trishtatha shathameva cha
One should enter the puja room only after daily bath. Bathing is the process for body purification. Those who have Srividya upasana should complete the mantra upasana and Srichakra worship before reciting this Sahasranama.
Rahasya naama saahasra midham paschad paden nara.
Janama madhye sakruchapi ya yevam padathe sudhee
Even listening to reciting this Sahasranama even once in a lifetime bestows immense punya.
Thasya punya phalam vakshye srunu thwam Kumbha Sambhava.
Gangadhi sarva theertheshu ya snayath koti janmasu
The benefit of bathing in the River Ganga in millions of births is bestowed.
Koti linga prathishtam tu ya kuryadh vimukthake.
Kurukshethre tu yo dadyath koti vāram ravi gruhe
Residing in Kashi and bathing in the River Ganga washes away all sins accumulated and hence this city is also known as Avimukta kshetram. Reciting this Sahasranama bestows the punya of installing crore Shivalingas in this sacred town of Kashi. Kurukshetra is dharma kshetra. When visiting Kurukshetra, one must compulsorily perform charity (dana). Charity means giving away that item which is most dear to us. Charity performed at time of solar eclipse is considered very meritorious. The person reciting this Sahasranama is bestowed with such great merit (punya).
Koti sournābharanam srothreeyeshu dwijanmasu
Ya kotim hayamedhanā maharedh gāngarodhasī
The merit of giving one crore gold ornaments and of performing one crore Ashwamedha yaagas is bestowed upon the person reciting this Sahasranama. When reciting the Sahasranama, we should realize that we are performing a yaaga and hence the results are in proportion to that. Recitation should be undertaken with that faith.
Achareth kūpa kotiyom nirjare maru bhūtale.
Durbhikshe ya prati dinam koti brahmaṇa bhojanam
The merit of digging wells in deserts or in drought-hit areas where there is scanty water supply is bestowed. Also, the benefit of feeding one crore needy Brahmins is granted.
Sradhāya parayā kuryath sahasra parivathsarān.
Tat punyam koti gunitam labhyeth punyamanutamam,
Parivatsara is 12 years. Sahasra parivatsara is 12000 years. The merit of reciting it 12000 years is bestowed.
Rahasya nāma sāhasre nāmno apyekasya keertanāth,
Rahasya nāma sāhasre namaikāpi ya pateth,
Tasya pāpāni nasyanti mahanthyāpi na samsaya.
Nithya karmanushtāna nishidhakaranadhapi
Even if one name among these 1000 is read with due faith, it is enough to procure the blessings of the Divine Mother. (However effort should be put in to learn all of them). The blessing of reciting the entire Sahasranama is granted. All sins are washed away with this recitation. The sins of not adhering to the daily nitya karmas is washed out.
Yat pāpam jāyate pumsām tat sarva nasyati drutam.
Bahunatra kimuktena srunu twam kalasi sutha,
Āthraika nāmne yā shakti pathakānām nivartate,
Tanni varthya maham karthum nālam loka schadurdasa.
There is no limit to the amount of sins that can be destroyed by reciting of even just one name with devotion. All the sins of the 14 lokas can be washed out with it. In 14 lokas a stotra that is as powerful as this Lalita Sahasranama cannot be found.
Yastyakthwa nāma sāhasaram pāpa hāni mabhhepsati,
Sa hi seethe nivrthyartha hima śailam niśevate.
However great an upasaka may be, his upasana will be of no use if he dislikes recitation of Lalita Sahasranama. Such a person can be compared to a person who goes to the Himalayas to escape from cold climate.
Bhakto ya keerthyen nithya midham nāma sāhasrakam,
Tasmai sri lalitha devi preethabheeshtam prayachati.
Those devotees who with faith daily sing these thousand names would be blessed directly by Lalitha Devi by fulfilling their wishes. Here the emphasis is on true bhakti for without devotion if a person recites it would not benefit.
Akeertayennidam sthotram katham bhaktho bhavishyati
Nithyam keerthanāśaktha keerthayeth punya vasare,
People who cannot sing it daily should chant it on atleast special occasions when it suits them.
Samkratou viśuve chaiva swajanma trithayēyane.
Navamyām vā chathurdasyām sithāyaam shukravāsare,
Sankranti occurs in every month when the sun changes the rashi. It occurs between the 13 and 15th of every month. It should be read during sankranti, vishuvu (when the sun is mesha rashi). The benefit of such recitation passes on to the family and friends also. Navami, fridays and chaturdashi are special days for the divine mother and hence should be read on those days.
Kīrthyen nāma sāhasram pournamasyām viseśatā.
Pournamasyam chandra bimbe dhyathwa sri lalitāmbikām
Reciting it on full moon is very special significance. She/he who sees the full moon after the recitation with the faith that the moon itself is the form of the Divine Mother will be further rewarded with immense punya.
Panchopacharai sampoojya paden nāma sāhasrakam.
Sarva roga pranasyanti deergam āyuscha vindhati
Those who perform the panchopachara puja and thereafter recite the Lalita Sahasranama will be blessed with longevity, good health.
Ayam āyuśkaro nāma prayoga kalpanotita,
Jwarārtha shīrasim sprushtwa paden nāma sāhasrakam
Tat kśanāth yāthi śirāmstado jwaropi ca.
If anyone in the family has fever, then touch his/her head and recite the Sahasranama with the intent of curing them. The benefit will pass on to the sick person. The fever will come down and vanish.
Sarva vyādhi nivruthyartha sprushtwa bhasma japedhidam,
Tad bhasma dharān deva nasyanti vyādha ya kśanāth.
The Lalita Sahasranama has the power to increase the power of the holy ash (vibhuti). (this should be undertaken only by upasakas).
Jalam samanthrasya kumbhastham nama sahasratho mune
Ābhiśichedha graham grasthān graham nasyanti tat kśanāth
Storing water in pot and chanting names.. and then sprinkling that water on themselves relieves all problems caused by planets
Those who consider the divine mother as residing in sudha sagara and offer abhishekam to her, the holy water can be used to rid of bad dream, childhood disorders etc.
Sudha sagara madhyastham dhyathwa Sri Lalithambikaam
Ya paden nāma sāhasram viśam tasya vinasyati.
Vandhyānām puthrā labhyā, nāma sāhasra manthridham
It rids of poisons and bestows children. Those desirous of begetting children should recite this regularly.
Navaneetam pradadyāthu puthralābho bhaved druvam.
Devya pāśena sambbhaddhā makrushta manka kushena ca
Dhyātvyā bheesthām striyam ratrou japen namasahasrakam
Those who do not conceive, should offer butter to the Divine Mother as naivedya and recite Sahasranama and consume as prasada or hold butter in the hand when reciting the Sahasranama and thereafter consume it as prasada. Doing so will ensure quick pregnancy. there is a hidden science behind this practice.
Aayāti svasameepam sa yadyapyanthapuram gata
Rajarakshana kaamasche drajavasadha ding mukha
Trirathram cha padeth ethad, sridevi dhyana thathpara
Sa raja paravasyena thurangam vaa matham gajam.
Aarohya yathi nikatam daasavath prani pathya cha
Thasmai rajyam cha kosam dadhya deva vasangatha.
Rahasya nama sahasram ya keerthyathi nithyasa
Than mukhaloka mathrena muhye loka thrayam mune.
Those who are deserted by their lover, who seek relief from material problems, who are suffering under the employer also get relief from this recitation. It attracts the king himself towards your place. Saints and kings themselves salute those who recite this Sahasranama regularly
Yasthvidham nama sahasram sakruth padathi bhakthiman
Thasya yea sasthravasthesham nihantha Sharabheswara.
Yo vabhicharam kuruthe nama sahasra padake.
The three lokas get peace and happiness when this is recited.The enemies of the devotee who reads these thousand names would be killed by arrows by Sharabheswara. Sarabeshwara is Lord shiva who roams around in the forests. He destroys teh evil forces, black magic and enemies who seek to undue harass the devotee.
Nivarthya thath kriyaam hanyatham vai prathyangira swayam.
Yea Kroora drushtya veekshanthe nama sahasra pathakam,
He who does black magic against one who reads the thousand names,
would be killed by Prathyangira devi herself for protecting the devotee.
Thaan andhaan kuruthe ksipram swayam marthanda bhirava.
Dhanam yo harathe chorair nama sahasra japeen,
He who steals the wealth of one who reads these thousand names, will automatically come and return the same.
Yathra kuthra sthiram vaapi Kshethra palo nihanthi thaam.
Vidhyasu kuruthe vadham yo vidwan nama jaapeena,
It grants good literary skills, speaking skills oratory, and writing skills. This will be granted by the kshetra palaka swamy.
Thasya vak sthambhanam sadhya karothi Nakuleshwari.
Yo raja kuruthe vairam nama sahasra japeen.
The differences with the king would be amicably settled in one’s favour.
Chathuranga balam thasya Dandinee samhareth swayam.
Ya paden nama saahasram shan masam bhakthi samyutha
Dandinee mata makes the person who recites this regularly for six months with devotion very strong.
Lakshmi chanchalya rahitha sada thishtathi thad gruhe.
Masamekam prathi dhinam , thri vaaram ya paden nara
Lakshmi is chanchala. Such a fickle oriented Lakshmi will remain stable.
Bharathi thasya jihvagre range nruthyathi nithyasa.
Yatsvekavaaram pathati pakshamaatramatandritah.
He who reads it daily for one month or at least two weeks, will have Saraswathi the goddess of intelligence dancing on the tip of his tongue.
Muhyanti kaamavashaga mrugaakshyastasya veekshanaat
Ya paden nama saaharam janma madhye sakrunnera,
Those who recite this regularly will get a kanti (glow) and their power of attraction increases.
Thad drushi gochara sarve muchyathi sarva kilbihai.
Yo vethi naama sahaasram thasmai dheyam dwijanmane
Annam vasthram dhanam dhanyam nanyebhyasthu kada chana.
Sri manthra rajam yo vethi sri chakram ya samarchathi,
He who makes the thousand names as his would be made the twice born,
Get food, cloths , wealth , cereals and all that he wishes.
Ya keerthayathi naamaani tham sath pathram vidhur budha,
Thasmai dheyam prayathnena Sri Devi preethimichata,
Do not preach this Lalita Sahasranama to him who has no faith in it. teach it with love to those who are truly desirous of learning it.
Ya keerthayathi namaani manthra rajam na vethi ya.
Pasu thulya sa vijneya thasmai datham nirarthakam
Those who do not recite this Lalita Sahasranama can be compared to pashu (animals) for they are not able to enjoy the nectar (amruta) that is being showered upon them.
Pareekshya vidhya vidhusha thasmai dadhya dwichakshana.
Sri manthra raja sadruso yadha manthro na vidhyathe
Before initiating the person into Lalita Sahasranama one should verify whether the person is worthy of learning it.
Devatha lalitha thulyaa yadhaa nasthi ghatodhbhava
Rahasya nama saahasra thulyaa nasthi thadha sthuthi,
There is no diety in this creation who is equal to Lalita Devi; similarly there is no stotram equal to Lalita Sahasranama.
Likhithwa pusthake yasthu nama saahasram uthamam .
Samarchayed sada bhakthya thasya thushyathi Sundari
The Lalita Sahasranama book should be respected and kept in the puja room. It should not be touched by the feet.
Bahunathra kimukthena srunu thwam Kumbha sambhava.
Naanena sadrusam stotram sarva thanthreshu vidhyathe,
There are so many tantras, but none of them even equals the Lalita Sahasranama, o maharishi agastya.
Thasmad upasako nithyam keerthyedhida madarath,
Yebhir nama sahasthraishtu Sri Chakram yo aarchayedh sakruth
All upasakas who worship the Srichakra, necessarily recite the Lalita Sahasranama for without which they cannot go ahead with their worship.
Padmair va thulasee pushpai , kalhaarai vaa , kadambakai.
Champakair jathee mallika kara veerakai
Lotus, tulasi leaves, kaluva flowers and kadamba flowers, champaka, jaaji, malli and karaveeraka (ganneru) are the flowers with which she can be worshipped.
Uthpalai bilwa pathrer vaa , kunda kesara patalai.
Aanyai sugandhi kusumai kethaki madhavee mukhai
In addition to the above, other materials can also be used for Her worship.
Thasya punya phalam vakthum na saknothi Mahesvara.
Sa vethi Lalitha devi swa chakrarchanajam phalam.
Only She knows the benefit that will accrue out of Srichakra worship.
AAnye kadham vijaaneeyur Brahmadhyaa swalpa medhasa.
Prathi masam pournamasya mabhir nama sahasrakai,
The buddhi of that person who recites this on Purnima will dazzle such that even the intellect of Brahma cannot be compared to it.
Rathrou yas chakra rajastha marchayeth para devathaam,
Sa yeva lalitha roopa sthad roopa lalitha swayam
Even archana and recitation at night is acceptable to Her.
Na thayo vidhyathe bhedho bedha ckruth papakruth bhavedh.
Maha navamyam yo bhaktha Sri Devi chakra madhyagaam,
Those who maintain differences between shiva and shakti and see them as 2 separate identities will incur sin. Those who recite it on Maha navami (during Navaratri) are rewarded will immense punya. This Sahasranama should compulsorily be recited on this Maha navami day.
Archaye nnama saahasrai sthasya mukthi kare sthithaa.
asthu nama sahasrena Shukra vare samarchayeth
such recitation grants salvation.
Chakra rajo maha devim thasya punya phalam srunu.
Sarvan kaamaan vpyeha , sarva soubhagya samyutha,
Those who recite this regularly will be rewarded with a good life in this birth followed by salvation.
Puthra pouthradhi samyuktho bhukthwa bhogaan yadepsithaan.
AAnthe lalitha devya sayujyam adhi durlabham,
The person will be bestowed with all the comforts of this world and with children. At the end you would get salvation under Lalitha , which is difficult to obtain. Sayujya is a type of salvation. It means that the person gets the luck of being in the Divine Mother’s vicinity.
Prathaneeyam shivadhyaischa prapnothyeva na samsaya,
Ya sahasram Brahmanaana mebhir nama sahasrakai,
And get all benefits of praying Gods like Shiva without any doubt.
Samarchaya bhojayedh bhakthya payasa poopa shad rasai.
Thadsmai preenaathi Lalitha swasamrajyam prayachathi.
Dedicating these thousand names to thousand Brahmins,
Feeding them with sweet Payasam And a meal which is blessed with all six tastes, Would make one dear to Goddess Lalitha, And she would bless you with her kingdom, And there would be nothing in the three worlds, That would be difficult to get to this man.
Na thasya durlabham vasthu thrishulokeshu vidhyathe.
Nishkama keerthayedhyasthu nama Sahasramuthamam,
Brahma jnana mavapnothi yena muchyathe bandanath.
He who chants these thousand names , Without any desires or attachments,
Would get the knowledge of Brhamam, And would be released from the bonds of life.
Dhanarthi dhanam aapnothi, Yasorthi prapnuyath yasa,
Vidhyarthi cha aapnuyath vidhya, nama sahasra keerthanaath.
One who wants money would get money, One who wants fame would get fame, And one who wants knowledge would get knowledge, By singing these thousand names.
Naanena sadhrusham sthothram Bhoga moksha pradham mune,
Keethaneeyamidham thasmad bhoga mokshadhibhir narai,
There is no prayer similar to this won , Which would give pleasures an salvation, Oh sage, For men by singing these thousand names, Would get both pleasures as well as salvation.
Chathurashrama nishtaicha keerthaneeyamidham sada,
Swadharma samanushtaana vaikalya paripoorthaye.
In all the four stages of life, Singing these thousand names, And also following one’s own Dharma, Would help reach his goal without any problem. The fourth ashram is note worthy. There are generally no vratas or pujas that are prescribed for yatis. At this stage there is nothing that they seek from the Lord. The benefits of all the pujas and vratas performed by them are directed towards universal welfare. Even so, it is prescribed that they should recite Lalita Sahasranama.
Kalou papaika bahule dharmanushtana varjathe,
Namanu keerthanam mukthwa nrunaam nanya paraayanam.
In the age of Kali , when all Dharmas are forsaken,Men would get salvation by singing these names and no other.
Loukika Vishnu nama saharaischa Shiva namaikamuthamam.
In the family life it is important to sing the names of Vishnu than to gossip,reciting Vishnu Sahasranama grants punya. But better than singing names of Vishnu is singing names of Shiva.
Shiva nama sahasraischa devyaa namaikamuthamam,
Devi Nama sahasraani kotisa santhi Kumbhaja.
Better than the thousand names of Shiva are the names of the Devi, And Oh Agasthya, the thousand names of Devi are one crore times better.
Theshu mukhyam dasa vidham nama sahasra muchyathe,
Rahasyanama saahasramidham sashtham dasaswapi.
There are ten important names out of these thousand names, And all these are praise worthy are praise worthy.
(the names are Ganga, Gayathri, Syamala, Lakshmi, Kali, Bala , Lalitha, Rajarajeswari, Saraswathi and Bhavani.)
Thasmad sankeethayennithyam kali dosha nivruthaye,
Mukhyam Sri mathu naamethi na janathi vimohithaa.
Singing them daily would cure the ill effects of Kali age, And the name “Srimatha’ is important and should not be forgotten.
Vishnu nama paraa kechith Shiva nama paraa pare,
Na kaschid aapi lokeshu Lalitha nama thathpara.
Better than the names of Vishnu are the names of Shiva, But in all the worlds there is nothing better than names of Lalitha.
Yenanya devathaa nama keerthitham Janama kotishu,
Thasyaiva bhavathi sradhaa Sri devi nama keerthane.
Even if the names of other Gods are sung in crores of births, It is equal only to singing of the thousand names with devotion. If in this birth we are able to recite the Lalita Sahasranama or have got upadesha from guru on this Sahasranama, it means that in crores of previous births we have performed immense japa on Vishnu or other gods.
Charame janmani yadha Sri vidhyaupasako bhaveth,
Nama sahasra padascha thadha charama janmani.
The one who recites Lalita Sahasranama regularly with faith, this is the last birth. Only in the last birth it is possible to be an Upasaka of Sri Vidhya, By reading the thousand names, this birth would become your last.
Yadhaiva virala loke sri vidyachara vedhina,
Thadaiva viralo guhya nama saahasthra pataka.
In this world it is rare to find Upasakas of Sri Vidhya, And it is also rare to find those who read the secret thousand names.
Manthra raja japaschaiva chakra rajarchanam thadha,
Rahasya nama patascha naalpayasya thapas phalam.
Chanting the king of chants followed by worship of Sri Chakra, And reading the thousand names gets the same result as doing Austerity (Thapas). Srimaata means Lalita Sahasranama; Srividya means shodashi and Srichakra means sumeru. Getting even one of them is very sacred; all three is very rare and special.
Apadannama saahasram preenayedhyaa Maheswareem,
Sa chakshushaa bina roopam pasyedheva vimoodadhi.
Without reading these thousand names and trying to please the Goddess,
Is like a fool trying to see a form without the eyes.
Rahasya nama saahasram thyakthwaa ya sidhi kaamuka,
Sa BHojanam vinaa noonam Kshunnivarthi mabheepsathi
Forsaking the thousand names and trying to get occult powers, Is like satiating hunger after forsaking all meals.
Yo Bhakthaa Lalitha devya sa nithyam Keertheyadhidham,
Nanyadhaa preeyathe Devi kalpa koti shathair api
That devotee who sings these names of Lalitha Devi, Need not sing any other for she will be pleased, Only by singing of this even for hundreds of eons.
Thasmad rahasya naamani , Sri Mathu prayatha padeth,
Yithi they kaditham Stotram rahasyam , Kumbha sambhava.
These thousand names are to be read for making the mother happy,
But this prayer which I told is a secret , Oh sage Agasthya.
Na vidhyaavedhinebrooya nnama bhakthaya kadachana.,
Yadhaiva gopyaa Sri Vidhya thadha gopyamidham mune.
The learned in Vedas , if they do not recite these names at least once,
The Sri Vidhya would be kept secret from them , Oh sage.
Pasu thulyeshu na broyajjaneshu sthotramuthamam,
Yo dadhadhi vimoodathma Sri vidhya rahithaya thu.
People who do not tell this prayer are like animals, If they give Sri Vidhya to the foolish without this prayer.
Thasmai kupyanthi yoginya, sonartha sumahaan smruth,
Rahasya nama saahasran thsmad sangopyedhidham.
If this Sahasranama is preached to the unworthy, The Yogis and Yogini Maatas would be very angry with the preacher , For this would lead them to problems, And that is why these secret thousand names, Are kept as great secret from every one.
Swathanthrena mayaa noktham thavapi kalasee bhava,
Lalitha preranaa deva mayoktham stotramuthamam.
Of Sage Agasthya , I would not have told them to you independently.
But for the advice given to me by Goddess Lalitha to tell you these.
Keerthaneeya midham bhakthyaa Kumbhayone nirantharam,
Thena thushtaa Maha devi thavabheeshtam pradasyathi.
Please recite these with devotion, Oh sage Agasthya,
And the goddess will be pleased and fulfill your wishes.

Yithyukthwa Sri Hayagreevo dhyathwa Sri Lalitham
bikaam,
Aananda magna hrudaya sadhya pulakito bhaved.
After telling thus , Sage Hayagreeva meditated on Goddess Lalitha, Was drowned in happiness and became enraptured.
Ithi Sri Brahmanda purane Uthara Kande, Sri Hayagrrevagasthya samvade , Sri Lalitha sahasra nama stotra, Phala srutheernama uthara Bhaga.
Thus ends the telling of effect of reciting Lalita Sahasranama.
