784. Prāṇa-rūpiṇī

785. Mārtāṇḍa-bhairavārādhyā

She is known by this name for two reasons-

a) Lord Shiva in His form of Mārtāṇḍa-bhairava worships Her.

There lived a demon by name Malla-daitya. To destroy him, Lord Shiva took on the form of Mallareeshwara or Mārtāṇḍa-bhairava. He worshipped the divine Mother and sought Her blessings before setting out to kill the demon. As She was worshipped by Lord Mārtāṇḍa-bhairava, She is Mārtāṇḍa-bhairavārādhyā.

b) She is worshipped by Lord Sun who also takes on the name of Mārtāṇḍa-bhairava.

What would happen to the entire population of living beings if the Sun were to stop rising for just 3 days? He is our life-giver. He fills our collapsing body (mārta) with consciousness (chaitanya, anda) and rejuvenates us. Since He fills the beings with the life- consciousness He is Mārtanda. He dispels our fears about sickness and diseases and for this reason He is addressed as Bhairava. He is Mārtāṇḍa-bhairava.

To dispel the darkness and to bless the world with the light, the Sun God prayed to the Divine Mother. Pleased with his prayers, the Divine Mother gave him a light-showering-glittering-gem called the Syamantaka mani out of thousands of such gems on Her crown. As She was worshipped by Lord Sun, She is Mārtāṇḍa-bhairavārādhyā.

It is a well-known fact that Bhairava is another name of Shiva. By adopting this name, the Lord Sun shows us his indistinguishable (abheda) nature from Lord Shiva. It is Lord Shiva who is appearing before us as the Sun God. During Rudra homa, the mantra ‘adityātmakayai rudrayai idan na mama’ is recited which means- Adithya (Sun God) and Rudra (Shiva) are one and the same.

Worshipping the Lord Sun daily bestows the person with good health. Maharishi Agastya declares this in Adithya hrudayam stotram.

786. Mantriṇī-nyasta-rājyadhūḥ

Meaning – She entrusted the responsibility of ruling (kingship) to Goddess Shyamala, who is also known as Mantrini.

In other words, the Divine Mother has entrusted the responsibility of protecting this world on to those who undertake relentless mantra recitation (deeksha). Due to this responsibility, Goddess Shyamala is the village-god (grama Devata) at many places. She bestows knowledge. For this reason children should worship her.

787. Tripureśī

Meaning – She is the ruler of Tripura.

Here Tripura refers to the three- individual soul (Jeevatma), antar atma (inner witness) and Paramatma. She rules them all.

788. Jayatsenā

Meaning – She leads a large army that is always victorious.

At the individual level, the senses and the various organs together with the intellect etc. work in harmony like a massive army. Likewise, to run this entire creation victoriously, She commands a huge army. For all these reasons, She is Jayatsena.

789. Nistraiguṇyā

Meaning – She is devoid of the three gunas (traits).

790. Parāparā

Meaning –

a) She is at a level higher than even the intellect. She is Parāparā.

In the Bhagavad Gita it is said – yo buddhe˙ paratas tu sa

b) She is over and above Parā and Apara bhakti (devotion) and Para and Apara-vidya (knowledge).

Where a person possesses unsurpassed devotion towards the Supreme Lord, then this devotion is known as ‘Para bhakti’. This devotion progresses to a state when the person completely surrenders himself to the Almighty. This devotion is termed Apara bhakti. Here the person sees no difference between himself and the Supreme Lord. Para bhakti paves the way to reach Apara bhakti.

With this the Mangala-chandi-vidya upasana, which began with the 750th name, concludes. We are now stepping into Kapardini-vidya-upasana.
